User language templates are templates to show what languages a user speaks, due to the fact that not everyone here speaks the same languages and the multilingual nature of the project. The idea originated on the Wikimedia Commons.
To add the Babel template to your userpage, follow these instructions:
- Start off with {{subst:Babel-
- Then add the number of language templates you want to display, followed by |
- e.g. {{subst:Babel-3| for three languages
- Next add one of the following codes for each language you speak or understand, separated by |, where xx is the Wikipedia code for the language. The general usage of each code level is as follows:
- xx-1 if you have a basic understanding of the language. You can understand and answer simple questions in the language.
- xx-2 if you have an intermediate understanding of the language
- xx-3 if you are advanced or fluent in the language, but not native. You can correct spelling and grammar errors, for instance.
- xx if you are a native speaker or have a grasp of the language as a native speaker would.
- Then finish by adding closing braces: }}
So, for example, {{Babel-2|en|de-1}} would indicate a native speaker of English with basic knowledge of German. {{Babel-4|sv|en-3|fr-2|es-1}} would indicate a native speaker of Swedish with an advanced knowledge of English, an intermediate knowledge of French, and a basic knowledge of Spanish.
You can also add stand-alone language templates by following the {{User xx-1}} format.
These templates add you to the category associated with your level of understanding, and to the overall category for that language.
To find someone who speaks a particular language, see user languages, and follow the links. The two and three letter codes are taken from ISO 639 (with some exceptions).
